DVC: The Bible calls Mary Magdalene a prostitute.
"That unfortunate misconception
[Mary Magdalene as a prostitute] is the legacy of a smear campaign
launched by the early Church. The Church needed to defame Mary Magdalene
in order to cover up her dangerous secret –– her role as the Holy
Grail." (p. 244)
Truth: Mary Magdalene in the Bible
The
gospels never say Mary Magdalene was a prostitute. She was
- One of the women who accompanied the
Twelve and provided for their needs, (Lk 8:2)
- Present at Jesus's crucifixion (Mt
27:56, 61; Mk 16:1)
- Witness to his resurrection (Mt 28:1;
Mk 16:9; Lk 24:10, Jn 20:1-2)
- Seven demons driven out of her. (Mk
16:9, Lk 8:2)
Another woman named Mary
- The sister of Martha
- Listened to Jesus while her sister
served dinner (Lk 10:39).
(Same?) Mary of Bethany
- with Martha, were sisters to Lazarus
(Jn 11:2)
- washed Jesus’ feet (Jn 12:3).
(Same?) woman who anointed Jesus' head at Bethany
(Mt 26:6-13; Mk 14:3-9)
Mary Magdalene as prostitute seems to come from
identifying Mary Magdalene and Mary of Bethany (and possibly other
women?) with each other and with
- the woman caught in adultery (Jn
8:2-11) and/or
- the sinful woman who washed Jesus'
feet with her tears and anointed them (Lk 7:36-50).
The identification of all of these women
as Mary Magdalene first appears with Pope St. Gregory the Great where
she is a repentant prostitute and faithful follower of Jesus.
Eastern Orthodox Churches
- Never identified Mary Magdalene with
Mary of Bethany, nor with the repentant woman.
- Calls Mary Magdalene the ‘Equal to
the Apostles’ since Jesus appeared to her and told to announces
his resurrection.
